Write down the important areas of IT and give each one an accountable owner. The owner does not need to be the technical person doing the work. They need to know the expected standard, who performs the work and whether it has been completed.

Start with six areas

  • Accounts and access
Who approves access, privileged roles and leavers?
  • Devices and updates
Who knows which devices exist and whether they meet the standard?
  • Data and recovery
Who confirms important information is protected and recoverable?
  • Suppliers and renewals
Who owns contracts, licences, domains and renewal decisions?
  • Security incidents
Who decides what happens when something suspicious occurs?
  • Improvements
Who prevents repeated issues from becoming permanent background noise?

Make responsibility visible

A one-page responsibility list is enough to begin. Review it when people or suppliers change. If two providers are involved, record where one responsibility ends and the other begins. This makes gaps visible before they turn into urgent work.
